By now, most of us have headed back to work for the new year after a (hopefully) nice long relaxing break. We have renewed enthusiasm and optimism for the year ahead, along with perhaps a few resolutions to become a better wife/mum/employee/business owner.
We strike a resolve that we will make more time to spend with our family because we had such a great time with them in the holidays that it has reinforced what we’re missing out on throughout the year.
We will have to remind ourselves of our 2016 goal in a few months time, when we succumb to the pressure of busy every day lives, and it will become harder and harder to meet the resolution we’ve set for ourselves.
Do we want to repeat this dangerous pattern year after year? Or is there a way to break the cycle?
You have family and friends that need you just as much (more really) than your employer does. And you also need to take time out for yourself to recharge and indulge in hobbies and activities that you enjoy.
As the saying goes, “All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy”.
We need to remember that we only get one life. If you spend it all at work, you WILL be missing out on enjoyable family experiences and moments, there’s no doubt about it, even if you really love your job!
One of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs Richard Branson is an advocate and role model for work life balance. An article on Virgin.com says:
“You don’t have to cut out the things you enjoy most in life. To be refreshed and ready for anything, you need to find time for play. You are far more likely to succeed if you are having fun, so play just as hard as you work, if not harder! Find time to laugh, whether it is catching up with friends, chatting to new people or sharing a joke on Twitter. Then when opportunity knocks, open the door and make every second count.”
Our best tip is to try and find something everyday that makes you smile, something that you love! It might be visiting your favourite coffee shop or making sure you schedule in time to play with your children or dog. Happiness is in everyday moments, and should not be reserved just for holidays.
