I think we’re becoming a little too complacent. I know we’re all busy or use ‘busy’ as a standard but poor excuse – but have we become too lazy busy to actually call a number and speak to a real person?
Is texting a real way to connect?
This week I thought of Susanne, an interstate friend that I’ve not seen for several years, or actually spoken to for over 12 months.
It’s not that we’ve fallen out or forgotten about each other – it’s just that… life just happens.
So this week I sent her a text, checking that she’s still at the same number and asking if she’s free in 45 minutes for a call. She’s the Mum of a toddler so I never know when’s a good time.
A few minutes passed – I suppose she doesn’t consider her phone to be an additional limb either…
I wait….
“Hi Bella!! Yes, right number and ok time… Look forward to it. xx”
So I called as planned.
We picked up where we left off however long ago, no need to explain who should have called who and when or whatever – we just had a proper one on one conversation.
In the time it took me to drive from my office to my home, a plan was made to visit.
You know… An actual FACE to FACE pick me up from the airport, sleeping over, make up the guest room, have your husband schedule a night in while we go out kind of visit.
48 hours later and flights are booked. We’re having a 4 day weekend together in a couple of weeks!
Thinking of someone? Don’t text, DM, PM or ‘like’. Our lifestyles are so ingrained in technology, it can be easy to believe that talking to a friend on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Linkedin, Twitter or even email is substitute for a real conversation.
Call. Go on.
It may make your day and perhaps someone else’s too!
